Chula Vista Lemon Festival

Did you know Chula Vista used to be known as the “Lemon Capital of the World?” For the past 25 years, Third Street Village has been hosting a Lemon Festival to celebrate that agricultural history. Read on to learn more about the history of Chula Vista lemons and how to get involved in the 25th Annual Lemon Festival!

Chula Vista Lemon History

All the way back in 1888, the Sweetwater Dam was constructed. When it was completed, the perfect combination of water, sun, and soil led to the boom of lemon growth in Chula Vista. Chula Vista dominated the market until the late 1950s when the housing demand took out most of the lemon groves. However, lemons are forever etched in the area’s history. San Diego has a suburb called Lemon Grove, which is also home to the largest lemon statue in the world. In fact, that statue turns 95 years old in 2023! On its 90th birthday in 2018, the City of Lemon Grove actually hosted a birthday party with singing and lemon treats. Although the area no longer has the lemon groves that put them on the map, residents love to celebrate the history and impact. Therefore, the Chula Vista Lemon Festival was born.

25th Annual Chula Vista Lemon Festival

This year, Third Street Village will host the 25th Annual Chula Vista Lemon Festival complete with live music, crafts, vendors, and lemons! This free celebration will also include lemon themed competitions, like pie eating and outfit contests. There are also many family friendly events like photo opportunities and a kids zone. On Saturday, August 13th from 11 AM to 6PM, downtown Chula Vista will become all about lemons. Come out and experience the fun and “Eat, Drink and Be Zesty!”
